We are offering an original Soviet PL-150 tape puncher (punching unit), manufactured in 1975. This electromechanical device was once a cornerstone of mainframe data entry, used to record information onto punched paper tapes before the era of magnetic storage.

Historical & Technical Context: Before the advent of floppy disks and cost-effective magnetic media, punched tape was a primary and reliable way to store programs and data. These paper strips held information in the form of punched holes, where each row represented a specific symbol.

  • Engineering: The central row of smaller holes, known as the "transport track," allowed a gear mechanism to feed the tape precisely through the As computing evolved, tapes standardized to 7 or 8 rows using ASCII encoding. These remained in active use in mini-computer systems well into the mid-1980s.

  • Performance: The PL-150 was part of a broader ecosystem of mechanical punchers and optical readers (such as the FS1501).
