How do I get MS Fonts working?

I downloaded the MS true type fonts package (can't remember the exact name of it). Anyway, unlike with MEPIS, it popped up with a box saying I had to do something to get the fonts working. I thought "I'll worry about that later", but my fonts look rather ordinary now, so I need to do something to get fonts working correctly.

Currently, I don't have Arial in OpenOffice, but it's listed in Firefox, although selecting Arial doesn't seem to change the font at all!

I just tried installing the msfonts from klik, but got an "update-ms-fonts can only be run as root."

I tried following some directions I found on the web, but ended up with an error about not being able to write on the volume.

Help!
