From what I could see in the box, it could have been new, old stock, but was stored in a dusty environment, and the box and the item looks a bit dirty

One of the corners shows some damage

No rattling around when shaken

I wasn't able to test it, but like most 40 year old tape players, the belts will probably need replacement, but you might luck out and they might work
