TRy doing

cfdisk /dev/(whatever the drive is)

from the live CD.

Ideally, you want three primary partitions:

/ no more than 3Gig
swap no more than 1/2 gig
/home the rest

/ and /home should be ext3 or reiser. Swap must be linux swap. Make / booteable.

Then just run the installer.
